Hidcote Console Table

Arguably one of my favorite pieces in the store right now is this console table (above). The photo doesn't do it justice, but it's made with a technique called faux bois. The table is hand made with concrete, then molded and sketched to have the appearance of wood. It's so chic and interesting without being too loud.

Flea Market Favorites

With summer coming to a close and the temperature slowly creeping downward, it's the perfect time to take advantage of one of my favorite favorite hobbies: flea market digging! There's nothing more rewarding than tunneling through a bin of old forgotten knick-knacks that somebody felt should be brought back to life, and coming up to find the perfect jacket, a rare copy of your favorite book, or even the perfect little vintage painting for that empty spot on your wall.

I'll never forget the time I went to the flea market and snatched up a beautiful, yet disheveled victorian settee for an unbelievable steal; after getting it reupholstered I felt like San Francisco's Marie Antoinette! What have been some of your favorite flea market finds?

Maybe it's all the nostalgia, but I'm going to make this very easy for you; below is a list of when and where you can find some of my favorite flea markets in the bay area...

Terrariums

So maybe I'm a little late on the terrarium train, but I've caught the fever. I had the pleasure this weekend of happening upon a little place in the city called Workshop. They offer daily classes for anything you can dream of, from screen printing to bike maintenance. I was lucky enough to partake in glass jar terrarium workshop and I am hooked!

Now for those of you who, like me, find yourself unaware of what exactly a terrarium is, it's a transparent globe or container in which plants (that generally prefer high humidity) are grown. Basically, you can have your own mini jungle. What I found to be most exciting is that you can grow a terrarium in almost any kind of glass enclosure, be it a mason jar, coffee pot or my favorite, a bell jar.

I selected a beautiful carafe from our store to begin with:

From there you have to put several layers before you begin to plant, all of the layers combined should take up about one third of your container.

A bottom layer of rocks, colorful glass, porcelain; something to provide some sort of drainage for your plants.
You put a thin layer of activated charcoal
And finally a thicker layer of soil.

From there you can get as creative as you'd like, put some colorful moss, add some pebbles and plant terrarium friendly plants using either chopsticks or a pencil if, like mine, your container isn't big enough to use your hands. Arrange it, then rearrange it until you're happy with your own little Ferngully. Seeing as this was a beginner class, we used succulents because they are the most easily spawned and you can practically break off any size piece of a succulent and it will sprout roots and grow freely with little encouragement. From there you water about once every 2-3 weeks and ta-da you have your very own mini ecosystem.

Though the options for terrarium containers are endless, here at Bae we have some recycled glass bottles that would give a vintage vibe to your terrarium as well as striking glass domes in various sizes. Eighth Wonder of the World?

With summer swiftly approaching I'm sure many of you are planning (or dreaming) of exotic vacation getaways. While most people are drawn towards beaches, tropical weather and palm trees others sway towards the seven wonders and the amazing architectural and artistic points of view from countries throughout the world. I myself have a top ten list of places I'd love to explore, but after some research I am reassessing that list to include some rather spectacular monuments that easily hold their own against Stonehenge.

Spread throughout what was once Yugoslavia, these architectural sculptures were commissioned by President Tito and designed by various talented artists and architects. These innovative and futuristic sculptures are spread throughout what is now mostly Bosnia and Serbia, but have fallen into disrepair due to neglect. The inspiration behind these pieces is speculated upon: some say they mark pivotal WWII battles, while still others say they were a way of promoting artistic expression and further drawing the line between a more Western Yugoslavia and Stalin's Soviet influence.

Some argue that these sculptures are relics of a harsh history for Yugoslavia and believe that they should be left to decay and crumble as all things do, but I believe that these monuments are inspiring depictions of a pivotal time, not only in Yugoslavia but throughout the world. Whatever the true motives behind them, they are indisputably breathtaking and the condition of these monuments covered in graffiti and rust is truly saddening.

There are a total of twenty-five of these spectacular monuments and if you are a history buff, architectural enthusiast or just somebody that can admire beauty when they see it, you had better add this to your travel list and quick because without much tourist interest who knows how long these relics will remain.

Spring is synonymous with renewal, rejuvenation and undoubtedly, redo. With the arrival of some very Moroccan and Indian themed pieces from Vagabond Vintage I've gotten the itch, that nagging feeling you get when you look around your room and feel bored, the colors are blasé and you wonder what it says about you.

I want to lay on a bed covered in pillows with rich prints and vibrant colors, surrounded by silk drapings, candles and someone feeding me grapes...Maybe I'm getting a little carried away, but with a few of these pieces as my inspiration I've begun piecing together an Eastern themed bedroom that will ease my design woes.

I'm sure by this point you're all aware of the devastating natural disaster that took place in Japan two weeks ago. With loved ones trying to get back to the U.S. and thinking of the natives beginning to repair their broken cities with the overwhelming statistics increasing daily, it's been heavy on my heart and my mind.

This is predicted to be the most expensive natural disaster in history,

estimated to cost up to 310 billion dollars. I felt this would be an appropriate time to discuss the important role that the Japanese have played in the evolution of modern interior design. Before Asian influence, wealth and status was expressed through abundance and extravagance. Rich textures, patterns and colors covered intricate and embellished furniture.

With the rich culture and inspiring attitude towards life, Japan brought their take on sophisticated design. Understated and flexible rooms, simplistic with natural colors and materials, they taught us that a room can be chic without being arrogant. Confident in its simplicity, Japanese design is all about minimalism and functionality.

Traditional Japanese homes generally include sliding partitions to make rooms more flexible with the possibility of more privacy or open space as needed. Furniture, particularly tables, are traditionally low to the ground with family members sitting down to meals on cushions rather than chairs and the walls and/or partitions are sometimes adorned with the difficult and beautiful art of Japanese brush painting.

Japanese culture is inspiring in so many ways, not merely their ancient yet innovative design techniques. The people there are facing an uncertain future and a long and difficult rebuilding process. Many would like to help, but don't know where to start or where their money and efforts will really be properly utilized. The American Red Cross is a great place to donate money that will directly aid those in Japan; also, here are a number Bay Area businesses trying to help and ways that you can too just by just participating.

Manzanita Madness!

So we've just received these beautiful sand blasted Manzanita Branches from Gold Leaf Design in Chicago and I'm instantly inspired. Not only are the Manzanita branches a beautiful sculptural piece, they're extremely versatile and I have several (or more like a million) ideas that make this amazing display a must have for every home.

Our Gold Leaf Design Manzanita branch and stand ($115) can be displayed as is for a natural and rustic feel, but here are a few ideas to spice up your home or make a memorable centerpiece:

These branches can be easily painted to add a whimsical flair and it's a great way to bring together a room's color scheme.
You can decorate them seasonally with Christmas ornaments, easter eggs, etc.
By combining techniques, Manzanita branches can also serve as a stunning and original wedding or party centerpiece.
For a romantic and neutral display you can add white twinkly lights or hang some delicate votives to throw a little mood lighting on any occasion.
To celebrate this beautiful season I suggest adding some springtime flowers (real or otherwise) for a jaw-dropping indoor landscape.

Just remember to plan your display around the branches themselves. If hanging heavy votives or ornaments, make sure to use plaster to hold your branch into the stand or chosen vase. Otherwise decorative sand or stones can be used to help your branch remain intact.

I Heart You

We just received these Zinc hearts that are the perfect addition to any living area, and just in time for Valentine's Day! Hanging them on a brick wall (a la the photo below) gives these hearts a rustic edge, or hung on a clean wall will add a shabby chic look to any room (I know, shabby chic is quite overused but they certainly have that element!). The large heart is $24, medium $19, and small $14. One of each, or a cluster of hearts will fill that bare spot in your room (I know there's one!) and complete your look.

Favorite Things

I want to share some of my favorite glassware pieces that we have in the store. All the pieces below will add to any evening soiree, a dinner party, or even a glass of water! I'm in love with all of these and I want to invite you to fancy up your kitchen cabinets:

First and foremost, our French glasses:

They're all three practical and stylish, but the middle glass (a French wine glass) is on the top of the list. It's just big enough to sip on something lovely or store your q-tips, either way it's a must.

Our dainty champagne glasses! Ah these make me so happy, this set makes me want to throw a cocktail party where we only serve champagne and fancy hors d'ourves.

They're each different in design and make your entire evening more festive.

If you love our champagne glasses then our set of drinking glasses is next. Similar to the champagne flutes previous, each has a different design and come as a set of six.

Perfect for a cocktail on the rocks or a glass of a day-appropriate beverage.

Last but not least, still sticking with the glass theme are these adorable bird salt and pepper shakers! We just got these in and I just about lost it when I opened them.

I realize the pictures don't do them justice (which is more of a reason to come in and see them for yourself!) but take my word, they're just exquisite. Put these lovelies on your kitchen table and add an ethereal look effortlessly.

Ok listen, I know it's only November, but I can't help but absolutely gush about our new ornaments and figures!! Look at these amazing deer/moose/birds/glitter/love that will make any home get in the holiday spirit. My favorite is the color pallet; the beautiful neutrals and gray glitter, the sugar inspired white, and no red! I secretly love snow-inspired pieces around the holidays and nothing too flashy, and these are the perfect blend of my love for Christmas and taste. When Art and Color Collide

Interior designer Amanda Nisbet bring bright colors and inspiring shape ideas to the table (pun definitely intended). My favorite part about these pictures are 1) the two round tables as coffee tables, so smart! 2) the kitchen!! The wall color, those awesome stools (I want five of them) and the round table makes it open and a warm place to be. 3) The symmetry in the living room! The two sides mirror each other and bring your eye back to the colors and materials. Love it Love it Love it.

Parlour Light Birdcage

Uhm can we all just stop what we're doing and feast our pretty little eyes on this beautiful birdcage??!! Nothing makes me happier than a birdcage (it all started with Louis Vuitton's Spring 2009 window displays) and we have one in the store! I just about died.

Brought to us from Design Legacy, this birdcage is rustic red in color and holds a light at the top. I can picture it in either a bedroom or a breakfast nook, maybe even in a family room where relaxing takes place. For a mere $275.00, this baby can be all yours.

Because we have two that will give you an excuse to ask for seconds. These are both two personal favorites from our lovely little store, and considering my two favorite things to drink are coffee and cocktails, I know I always look good doing both.

When I wake up I want my cup to sparkle, shine, and make me look stylish while I'm reading the paper. This mug is the perfect gift for someone (or yourself) and will instantly glisten their morning.

Whenever I'm drinking wine (again, one of my favorite things to do/drink) and being the klutz I am I'm terrified of dropping it by holding onto the stem, but I don't want to heat the wine with my warm hand by holding it around the glass. Thank goodness our friends at Fred & Friends sought a solution to my dreadful problem! I can hold my glass with confidence while keeping it cool and refreshing. I'll take four, it's a party!

Lea Wood Ceramics is our newest addition to Bae, and I am completely obsessed with these beautifully hand-made (from start to finish, that's dedication) ceramic bowls and kitchen accoutrements, including serving bowls, food platters in multiple sizes, all completely food functional. Inspired by her childhood in South Africa, each piece has a rustic feel with beautiful design and pops of color. Her focus is to create a line of "contemporary, aesthetically pleasing, yet functional ceramics that you will love and not think twice about using in your daily lives" (from her website < click to view!). Here are a few of my favorite pieces plus her own descriptions below. Come by the store to see them in the flesh (or the clay..)!!

'NEW MODERN' was developed from a personal desire to have a contemporary shape to not only serve food ON, but to enjoy as a unique piece of sculpture.

'NEW CLASSIC' shape: I have incorporated the Zulu idea of making 'cut out handles' in the piece, as is their tradition. They do this in order to effectively pass large heavy wooden platters around the fire from one person to the other. They are truly unique and original both in concept and design.

'CLOUD' is an elegant 'stand alone if you want' shape that developed all on its own in front of my eyes!

BLK&BLU: The playful and organic spontaneous feeling of this design pushes the contemporary edge into having a bit more fun.

Let's go to the Mission tonight

Upon hitting my one year mark in the bay area I've come to find that my favorite part of the city is in fact the Mission. Sure, other parts are more lush with trees and Victorian homes, but the Mission is my go-to for a night out, a great meal, and a great thrift find (my three favorite things to do). So when I found a House Tour on Apartment Therapy in the Mission, I had to post! Not only is it in my (as you now know) favorite part of the city, but her house has the minimalistic style that I strive for and love. And she's a local! Let's have a peek:

Susan's one bedroom apartment is snuggled between the Mission and beautiful Noe Valley, and is I thing a beautiful blend of the two neighborhoods. Her apartment is full of antiques yet doesn't have that museum feel (think your grandparents house, or any avid antique collector). In contrast, it has a warm and welcoming atmosphere and you can see the time and consideration each piece went through before being chosen.

My favorite parts of her house hands down is the artwork on the walls. In the picture below they're not symmetrical with the bookshelf between them (with that fantastic lamp that I'm putting on my must buy list) but it somehow balances beautifully and 'brings your eye back' (a term I learned in fashion school, in other words no part of the space leaves your eye wandering, it's all cohesive).

And her bed!! After seeing Breakfast at Tiffany's years ago I've been dreaming of owning a wrought iron bed and hers is on point (and the blanket on the bed is a handmade Amish quilt from her hometown in Pennsylvania, that's impressive). This was my swoon of the day, I hope it becomes yours!

Nothing makes me happier than a tea party, and after re-watching the classic Alice in Wonderland last night (and by classic I mean the Disney version, hey I was sick I needed some childhood soothing mechanisms) I wanted to thrift my buns off to find an old China set similar to the pictures below. When they're not in use, take advantage of that shelf in the kitchen that has nothing on it (I know you have one) and display your tea delectables. It may even encourage you to have more tea parties, and who doesn't like getting invited to one of those? You busy tomorrow afternoon?

But! On vacation I stayed with a dear friend of mine whose room was the epitome of sleek man living. Crown molding, metal (possibly steel) chandelier, leather bed frame with dark burgundys and forest greens. It's how every man's room should be.

Jewelry is a Girl's Best Friend

Amling Designs, created and made by Claudia Amling-MacFarland, is the newest addition to Bae! After much success at our trunk show we had to carry more of her pieces, and I'm so excited about it!

Her jewelry is not only local (she is based out of our sister city of Santa Cruz) and one of a kind, but she uses an intricate process using PMC (Precious Metal Clay). In short, it's a unique form of silver or gold that has flexibility to be molded and sculpted by hand (this is my favorite part; all her pieces are carefully hand made by her which makes it intimate and personal). It starts soft and pliable, similar to clay - hence the name, and once fired in the kiln it hardens and is ready to wear. The best part is each piece is 'reversible'; due to the molding process the texture on the back side is just as beautiful as the front, so you can wear your necklace in either direction. Divine process, even better results.

Here are some of my personal favorites; I absolutely love the charm necklace which can be customized with personal initials (how about Liz+Javier Bardem? Hey, a girl can dream!)

We just got two tables from the local San Francisco vendor Table Asia (click for the website!) and I'm a bit obsessed. The craftsmanship that is put into each piece is astounding; it's quite apparent even looking at them how much time and detail was put forth. Their store offers a multitude of pieces, such as conference tables, side tables, sculptures, art (in the form of stencils called 'Katagami', I'll take two please), and so much more. I'll let Table Asia do the rest of the talking, but needless to say I'm impressed.

And if you're anything like myself (a snob for interiors at any establishment I plan on spending more than 4 hours in drinking and dining with friends) you can appreciate Lee Broom's aesthetic eye for antique details and fine cuts. The same attention you would give any room in your house (and is actually inspiring me to turn a room into a cigar/scotch lounge) Broom gives to Coquine.

Casa sugar asked me, "Do you have a vanity?". Then she talked about exactly how I felt as a child, wishing for a beautiful place to keep my beautiful jars and potions and jewelry.

Well I wish I did! I love this mirrored desk/vanity. It evokes a decadence and luxury in it's clean lines that makes me wish I had a pristine blue room to put it in, next to my silk draped chaise. It is romantic and old hollywood and also modern in it's metal and glass.

This San Francisco ex-pat designer, featured in Elle Decor, placed his desk in front of dramatic black and white wall it is strikingly modern and whimsical. There are so many options for this gorgeous unique item, it would make any room look special.

Artist Statement:
Blurring the lines between organic form and manufactured design, Marilynne Morsehead's work celebrates the opulent simplicity of light, shadow and pattern. It's a unexpected journey into a serene and intimate world. A silent room, a gentle breeze, a rhythmic sound — in this instance, an image — is used to soothe, and focus our energy.

All photography will be available for sale, and would be a striking addition to anyone's home.

There’s a least one room, and usually more, in a house that could use a good table lamp. Often, table lamps sit next to our favorite couch or armchair to give us some light for reading. These tips will help you pick out a great table lamp.

1. The options for buying table lamps are nearly limitless. That’s why you need to have some idea of what you want before you start shopping. Think about your personal style. Also consider the room that the table lamp will occupy. If you enjoy contemporary styles, then you will be attracted to a modern design. If, however, your taste favors the traditional, you are likely to be happier with a more conservative design.

2. There are three major components to a table lamp: the base, the column and the shade. The base and the column are often made of the same material. Material is an important consideration for your table lamp. You can find table lamps made of brass, wood, brushed aluminum, wrought iron, ceramic and glass. Again, the material you choose will depend on how the design of the table lamp fits your overall style. Just realize that if you prefer one type of material, the chances are good that you can find it fashioned into a style you like.

3. Choosing a shade for your table lamp also leaves you with many choices. Shades, like bases and columns, can be made of metal, cloth, glass or synthetic materials. Or some combination of several types of materials. Pick the style and material that appeals to you and that matches the current décor of the room where the lamp will sit.

4. An important factor to consider when choosing a shade for a table lamp is the width of the lower brim. If the shade has a wide lower brim, then much light will be cast on the table where it sits and on the surrounding area. This light will enhance your ability to read near the table lamp. On the other hand, if the lower brim is narrow, less light will be cast on the table and the surrounding area. Shades with narrow brims are best for simply bringing some light into a room.

5. Finally, you can choose the kind of on and off switch you prefer. Some switches are pull chains that hang lower than the brim of the table lamp. Other are on the light socket, and must be turned or pushed to be activated. You can also choose a design with the switch on the base of the table lamp or on its cord. And, there are many table lamps available that turn off and on when you simple touch the base or the column.

Inspirational Design : Tallman Hotel

I've always been inspired by design-focused individuals and businesses using eco-friendly materials and practices. We, at Bae, have a similar principle in mind.

I recently stumbled upon a great hotel, an oasis of higher-end design, in the midst of Clearlake, north of Napa Valley. I was eating lunch with a good friend and decided to take a peek and see the rest of the property. I was pleasantly surprised for such a remote "destination". I came to find out they completely renovated this property that had been vacant nearly 40 years.

These images don't do it justice, but I wanted to share the treasure I've found in an ever-growing tourist destination. (You should see the press on this hotel!)
